According to Johns Hopkins University, there are now more than 50 million confirmed coronavirus infections worldwide. The number of deaths associated with the virus since the beginning of the pandemic is 1.25 million, according to data from the University of Baltimore in the USA yesterday.

On Saturday alone, the total number of reported infections had increased by more than half a million. The pandemic is spreading rapidly, probably also due to the cooler weather, especially in countries in the northern hemisphere, including Europe and North America. In the USA, almost 130,000 new infections were reported for Saturday.

The university figures are slightly higher than official data. According to the US experts, almost 50.1 million confirmed infections were reported worldwide until yesterday. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), there were 49.6 million infections and 1.25 million deaths.

At 9.9 million, the USA has the highest number of confirmed infections. The country, with a population of around 330 million, also has the highest number of deaths, with more than 237,000. India (8.5 million) and Brazil (5.6 million) followed in second and third place in terms of the most confirmed infections. These two populous countries also have the highest number of deaths after the USA – 162,000 have been recorded in Brazil and 126,000 in India.
